Dakota Keats: Radio Promotion Internship

I interned for a radio promotion company over the Summer of 2024. I was able to learn a lot about the metal music industry and even got to go to a metal show to meet people involved in the music industry such as artists, bands, managers, and radio show hosts.

Final Project Outcome

This final report was submitted to my internship supervisor.

What I did

I was taught how to zero the data from the system that consisted data of different radio stations in various regions of the United States. Since the company promotes metal music to radio stations across America, each region will be separated into its own section containing a handful of radio stations. Another task that I would usually complete every day of my internship was inputting the spin count and add count data into both systems that we use to keep track of it. This information would get added to excel sheets that were constantly being updated as the spin and add counts grew each day or week. A lot of my tasks consisted of inputting new data into the companies tracking systems on a weekly basis.

What I learned

One of the many lessons that I learned through my coworkers and my first-hand experiences is that having connections is crucial when working in this industry. Additionally, it is important to network with everyone that you meet. I was able to experience networking in the music industry when my supervisor invited me to tag along with him to a show. Finally, I have learned many skills that can translate to other jobs or careers that I may have down the line. The skills that I have learned from this job such as coding, data entry, organization, and communication will be helpful to know, especially in other jobs that I pursue that are involved with the radio business or the music industry.
