I was given the opportunity with a fellow classmate to work with Shakedown Street which is a consignment store located in Oneonta, New York on Main Street. I was able to choose any of the clothing in the store to create this window display with only one rule, make it holiday themed with sparkles!
Final Project Outcome
We were instructed to decorate and create the left window as well as design three mannequins. This display, which had a Christmas or holiday theme, was created in the winter time. The clothes give the store a luxurious and cozy feel. They are all dressed with a jacket, top, bottom, and accessories. Between two of the mannequins is a display cabinet that features various purses and shoes.
What I did
I focused on created a cohesive eye-catching visual appeal making sure to successfully highlight the stores aesthetics. My involvement included selecting and arranging merchandise such as clothing and accessories then putting these items on mannequins. This took a lot of trial and error because when you envision an outfit it could look different in person. Once dressing the mannequins we had to place them in a captivating way. In order to attract attention from people walking by I concentrated on complementing colors and layout. We also added a cabinet in the middle of the two mannequins to highlight a few more accessories such as handbags and shoes.
What I learned
From this project I learned how to create a window display for a store I am not familiar with. I learned to create outfits in a short period of time that not only had to represent a theme but also be fashionable. When working in a consignment store you have to adjust to a limited number of items. I had to make sure these concepts fit the shops style and also make it appealing to its target market. I was able to improve my ability to arrange and display these items of clothing in a way that draws attention to them. Being a fashion merchandise major I was able to use all of the things I learned and apply it to this window display. Additionally, I was taught skills in problem solving and collaborating which strengthens my skills in the fashion industry.
