This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to study and intern abroad in London. I was selected to be the Public Relations intern at Jenny Packham’s headquarters, where I gained firsthand experience working in one of the most renowned fashion houses. During my internship, I was able to assist in various aspects of public relations, including media outreach, event coordination, and content creation. This role allowed me to immerse myself in the fast-paced world of fashion PR, sharpening my communication and organizational skills while learning about brand management in a global context. The experience also provided me with valuable insights into how luxury fashion brands like Jenny Packham manage their public image and interact with media, influencers, and clients.
Final Project Outcome
This experience was possible because of the SUNY Oneonta Global Education and Career Planning and Networking offices.
What I did
As the intern of public relations at Jenny Packham, I worked on strategizing sample pulls for a number of influencers and celebrities so that stylists could display designs on red carpets, assisting in arranging garments from prior seasons for the archive room, and lastly helping with model casting calls for JP’s new collections. I had the incredible opportunity to assist in the upcoming collection of spring/summer 2024 photoshoots, in which I prepared models for pictures along with filming TikTok/Instagram backstage engagement videos. I’m grateful to have left my internship with new skills and a stronger understanding of the fashion industry.
What I learned
I’ve gained a deeper, more independent understanding of how the fashion industry operates, particularly in London, through my work in public relations. This experience has broadened my knowledge of how brands engage with their audience, manage their image, and build relationships with the public. I’ve also learned about cultural appreciation, recognizing the importance of respecting and embracing diverse perspectives and trends in the global fashion market. Additionally, my skills in advertising, marketing, and communications have been significantly enhanced. I’ve developed a more strategic approach to creating campaigns, refining my ability to craft messages that resonate with different target audiences. Overall, this experience has not only improved my technical skills but also broadened my understanding of the interconnectedness of the fashion industry and public relations.
