This project aims to raise awareness and funds about the water quality issues in Guatemala through community engagement on the SUNY Oneonta campus.
Final Project Outcome
This poster was presented at the Student Research and Creativity Activity Showcase at SUNY Oneonta on April 16th, 2025.
What I did
For this project I worked with Greek-Life organizations on campus to carry out a tabling event. I worked the Sigma Delta Tau and Sigma Sigma Sigma sororities on April 17th in Hodgdon IRC . Money was collected through Venmo and everyone who stopped at the table was encouraged to fill out a community outreach Google Forms survey I created. By the end of the event $64 were raised and 31 people had filled out the outreach survey. It revealed that 93.3% of the people who stopped felt like they learned something new about the water quality issues in Guatemala. More tabling events will occur as the semester progresses.
What I learned
This project taught me the importance of collaboration when it comes to community outreach projects. I credit the success of my first outreach event to the help of the sororities I worked with. I also learned that organizations and individuals are more willing to help with sustainability related issues than I thought they would be. This experience will help me in the future because I developed skills that allow me to explain environmental issues and their impacts to people who may not have prior knowledge on these topics.
