Nicholas Festa: Pollinator Garden Design

I have been tasked with designing several pollinator gardens.

Final Project Outcome

This was the poster I made for SUNY Oneonta’s Student Research and Creative Activity Showcase.

What I did

For this project, I worked with Otsego County native flower species to design several pollinator gardens. I cross referenced several sources including the Cornell cooperative extension, the New York Flora Atlas, and the USGS database. Using the data I gathered, I chose various host plants, food source plants and deer-resistant plants to ensure the prosperity of the host and food plants.

What I learned

I learned how to access information on native and non native plants found in New York counties, as well as how to design a proper pollinator garden. I also gained experience implementing series of plants that have alternating blooming times, allowing for food availability for pollinators throughout the growing season. Another thing I learned was how to draw up a pollinator design.
