Liana Walton: House Of Consignment Window Displays

In February, I completed an extra credit experiential learning project for my Fashion Promotion course with Dr. Portway, where I traveled to House of Consignment in Unadilla, NY to design and set up multiple window displays using the store’s clothing and accessories. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply visual merchandising principles in a real retail environment.

Final Project Outcome

The window displays were completed as part of an extra credit assignment for my Fashion Promotion course and featured visual merchandising work done at House of Consignment in Unadilla, NY. The final displays showcased curated outfits and were photographed for submission to Dr. Portway.

What I did

For this project, I traveled to House of Consignment in Unadilla, NY, where I collaborated with the store owner to select clothing and accessories for window displays. I created multiple themed displays that reflected the store’s inventory and seasonal trends, focusing on visual balance and color coordination. I applied concepts learned in my Fashion Promotion course, such as layout design, focal points, and consumer appeal. I also photographed the finished displays for documentation.

What I learned

I learned how to apply visual merchandising techniques in a retail setting and gained hands-on experience in curating and styling window displays. I developed a better understanding of how color, layout, and placement can influence customer interest. Working directly with store inventory taught me to be resourceful and creative with available pieces. This experience will help me in the future by strengthening my styling and merchandising skills, which are essential for careers in the fashion industry.
