About me
My name is Raul Ramirez, and I am a first-generation Mexican American originally from Jackson Heights, Queens. My background and upbringing have played a significant role in shaping who I am and how I see the world. Growing up in a diverse community has given me a strong appreciation for different cultures, perspectives, and experiences, while also teaching me the importance of community and looking out for the people around me.
I am currently a senior, dual majoring in Business Administration and Media Studies. My academic interests reflect my passion for understanding both the business and communication sides of the world, particularly how media can influence the way people understand the issues that affect their everyday lives.
The main pillars of my life are advocacy, justice, and empathy. I try to carry these values with me in everything I do and in the way I interact with others. I have a strong passion for journalism and storytelling, especially when it comes to giving people information that can help them better understand their communities.
One of my biggest interests is local government and the impact it has on everyday life. I am passionate about educating and informing local communities about how government decisions can affect them in both the short term and the long term. I believe people should have access to clear, understandable information about the communities they live in and the institutions that represent them.
Why I serve
I was inspired to apply to the Empire State Service Corps because I see it as an opportunity to become more actively involved in serving my community while developing a deeper understanding of civic engagement. I am particularly drawn to the program because it emphasizes meaningful service, civic participation, and creating positive connections within communities.
The Civic Engagement and Civil Discourse components of the program especially stood out to me. I am interested in helping encourage voter participation and making civic involvement more accessible to students and those around me. At the same time, I value the importance of creating spaces where people can engage with perspectives different from their own through respectful and constructive dialogue.
I believe the Empire State Service Corps would allow me to contribute to my campus and community in a meaningful way while learning from others who are equally committed to public service. I am excited by the opportunity to take an active role in strengthening civic participation, encouraging dialogue, and helping build a more engaged community.
Fun Fact
I really enjoy video games and art, especially visiting museums in the city!
