Emely Lopez: Engagement and Data Visualization Intern – Office of Sustainability

During Spring 2025, I interned with the Office of Sustainability at SUNY Oneonta as an Engagement Intern. I supported outreach efforts and created multiple data dashboards using Power BI to visualize sustainability program impacts, including waste management, thrift store activity, and student engagement.

Final Project Outcome

This final report was created and submitted to my internship supervisor at the Office of Sustainability. It highlights my work on data visualization dashboards that track the progress and impact of key sustainability programs at SUNY Oneonta.

What I did

As an Engagement Intern at the Office of Sustainability, I tracked student engagement and helped promote sustainability programs. I collected and organized data from events and initiatives such as the Thrift Store, Waste Management, and Green Room Certification. Using Power BI, I created interactive dashboards to visualize this data and share it with the campus community. I also contributed to the internal development of the Green Dragon Recognition dashboard to guide future improvements.

What I learned

I learned how to collect, manage, and visualize data using Power BI, which helped me communicate patterns and progress clearly. I gained hands-on experience with sustainability programs and how data supports decision-making in real-world settings. I also improved my communication, project management, and teamwork skills. This experience strengthened my ability to apply computer science tools in meaningful ways and prepared me for future roles in data analysis and sustainability-focused work.
